My client is convinced that i should use an impermeable membrane behind a new sleeper wall reclaimed creosoted oak.

Extra expense that may have been spared if we had the plastic sheeting. In cold weather a sheet of poly on the interior side of a wall probably won t cause any problems. By installing a sheet of poly there you cut off that drying mechanism and water that finds its way into walls can stay there longer and do more damage. The humid air is indoors and the dry air is outdoors.

Could we somehow seal it externally. Stretch the plastic sheet tightly across the top of the wall and staple it to the studs and plates with a hammer tacker a tool designed to install staples quickly and efficiently. Lay the top edge of the fabric over top of the wall. I have suggested using geo textile and gravel to prevent them touching soil and to allow for drainage but i know they will prefer polythene dpm as where this is installed behind other softwood posts in their garden it has lasted better than areas where there is no polythene.

The sheet of poly still cuts off drying to the indoors but it keeps the water vapor in the humid indoor air away from the cold surfaces inside the wall.
